The department of anatomy, HIMS, was established in 2008. It deals with teaching normal human body structure in such a way that the knowledge of anatomy may be applied to understand the clinical problems, which may help in diagnosing the diseases and the treatment. For surgical disciplines the knowledge of anatomy is very helpful. It is a common saying that a good surgeon is first a good anatomist and then a good surgeon. Besides dealing with body structure, it also deals with providing knowledge about genes, embryology, histology, anthropology and imaging sciences. The knowledge of these subspecialties is very helpful in understanding the congenital disorders, legal cases and pathology of different disorders. To explain these subspecialities, the Anatomy department, HIMS, has established a well-established museum which has a large number of mounted specimens, models, charts/flexis, photo frames and bones. As a modeller of anatomy, HIMS has prepared artificial bones which are natural-looking. It is a unique feature of the anatomy department, not seen in any other department of anatomy.

Research lab and Neuroanatomy lab are helpful in the research work of postgraduates and faculty members. Teaching faculty are full-time, well-qualified and quite knowledgeable. Dr Naresh Chandra, Prof. & Head; Dr Indra Kumar, Associate Professor; and two assistant professors, Dr Ranjeet Kumar & Dr Shweta Singh, are very sincere teachers. Besides teaching in the department of anatomy, HIMS has formed an anatomical society, ASHIMS, which is registered and has a website, www.ashims.com. Going through the website, one can know about various extracurricular activities, like holding seminars and seminar competitions, charts, models, debates, quizzes and dissection competitions. Every year the annual function of the Anatomical Society is organised. Awards are being given to students and employees to encourage them so that they feel elated and work with more efficiency. Each and every student and faculty member is a member of the society. The Anatomical Society has its own library and bone stock, which are being handled by the students only. There are a large number of books and bones. This is a unique establishment which is found only in a few medical colleges of India in U.P. Only King George's Medical University, Lucknow, has the society.

The Society of HIMS is registered under the U.P. Registration Act. The Department of Anatomy has a well-equipped histology lab having micro-slides and a dissection hall having a sufficient number of human cadavers. Dissection is regularly conducted in the dept. Teaching of Anatomy is done by chalk & board, PowerPoint, and various other media like overhead projector, flip chart & models, etc. Thus making it an interesting and easily understandable subject, which is considered the subject dealing with facts and difficult to understand. The postgraduate course in anatomy was established in 2013. Some of the postgraduate projects which are going on at present are:

1. Morphological study on human ear ossicles.
2. Endometrial assessment and its relation to implantation sites
3. Role of ultrasonography in estimation of foetal gestational age using various foetal biometric parameters.
4. Exophthalmometery in normal subjects.
